The 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards honored the best in U.S. prime time television programming from June 1, 2015 until May 31, 2016, as chosen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The ceremony was held on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California, and was broadcast in the U.S. by ABC. The ceremony was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.[1][2] It was preceded by the 68th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which took place over two nights, September 10 and 11, at the Microsoft Theater.[1][3]

Crime anthology The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story won five awards, the most awards of the night, while fantasy drama Game of Thrones won three, including Outstanding Drama Series and surpassing Frasier (37) as the fictional television program with the most Primetime Emmy Awards with 38 wins in six seasons.[4] The political satire series Veep also won Outstanding Comedy Series for the second time in a row, while its producer and lead star Julia Louis-Dreyfus established the new record of wins for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series; it was her fifth consecutive win for the series, and sixth overall in the category.[5]

James Christian "Jimmy" Kimmel (born November 13, 1967)[3] is an American television host, producer, writer, comedian, voice actor, musician and radio personality. He is the host and executive producer of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, a late-night talk show that premiered on ABC in 2003. Kimmel also hosted the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 23, 2012.

Prior to hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he was best known as the co-host of Comedy Central's The Man Show and Win Ben Stein's Money. Kimmel has also produced such shows as Crank Yankers, Sports Show with Norm Macdonald, and The Andy Milonakis Show.

The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story is the first season of the FX true crime anthology television series American Crime Story. The season, which debuted in February 2016, revolves around the infamous O. J. Simpson murder trial and is based on Jeffrey Toobin's book The Run of His Life: The People v. O. J. Simpson (1997).[1]

The People v. O. J. Simpson was acclaimed, receiving praise for most of the performances, directing and writing. At the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards, the season received 22 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Limited Series.[2]

Julia Scarlett Elizabeth Louis-Dreyfus[1] (/ˈli ˈdrfəs/; born January 13, 1961) is an American actress, comedian and producer. She is known for her work on the comedy series Saturday Night Live (1982-85), Seinfeld (1989–98), The New Adventures of Old Christine (2006–10), and Veep (2012–present).

Louis-Dreyfus broke into comedy as a performer in The Practical Theatre Company in Chicago, which led to her casting in the sketch show Saturday Night Live from 1982 to 1985. Her breakthrough came in 1990 with a nine-season run playing Elaine Benes on Seinfeld, one of the most critically and commercially successful sitcoms of all time. Other notable television roles include Christine Campbell in The New Adventures of Old Christine, which had a five-season run on CBS, and her role as Selina Meyer in Veep, which has recently been renewed by HBO for a fifth season.

Louis-Dreyfus' film roles have included Hannah and Her Sisters, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Deconstructing Harry and Enough Said. She also voiced roles in several animated films, including A Bug's Life and Planes.

Louis-Dreyfus has received a Golden Globe Award and seven Emmy Awards. She has also received six Screen Actors Guild Awards, five American Comedy Awards and two Critics' Choice Television Awards. Louis-Dreyfus received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010 and was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2014.
